Web414 September Meetup

Alt

Thursday, September 9th - 7:00pm

The Mystery Show!

What do we have planned for the September Web414 Meeting? Nothing. What? Yup, that's right. We got nothing. But that's OK, because Web414 is made up of people, and we're all part of making Web414 happen. So if you want to make the September Web414 Meeting happen, show up and make it happen. We're smart people, and we can get by without any pre-planning. And we'll prove it. See you there!

Note: Join the discussion on what the meeting COULD be about on twitter.

LikeMind: Mind Mapping: "Why the Trend?"

Alt

Friday, September 17th - 7:00am

The answers vary. Some say pure productivity. Others say improved creativity. Still others talk about collaborative power. One thing is clear: Mind mapping is becoming increasingly popular in business settings.

If you want to learn more about it, attend our September 17 panel discussion, held at Bucketworks, starting at 7:00 AM.

The panel of "power users" will talk about their favorite uses of this tool. It's definitely a Milwaukee Likemind presentation that is not to be missed!

RubyMKE: An Introduction to HTML5 WebSockets & CRAMP

Monday, September 21st - 7:00pm

One of the more interesting items for developers in the HTML5 specification is the WebSocket API. It brings real two-way communication with a remote host to the browser. It enables a new type applications like Pusher and the apps built on top of it, in a standard way, without requiring Adobe Flash in modern browsers.

Chris Powers will demonstrate how to build a Chat application that make use of the WebSocket API. He will then demonstrate how to integrate the backend with Pusher and then with the asynchronous evented Web app framework Cramp.

MKEPUG: Open Q/A and Talk of Testing (The Saga of Tracker 9725)

Alt

Tuesday, September 28th - 6:00pm

Joel Clermont and Aaron Saray will be leading an open Question/Answer section. Have a bit of code that is stumping you? Bring it! Need some suggestions on some different tools? Let's share. Just know where to go 'from here', we can cover that too. This will be a pretty informal portion - similar to our previous on Developer Best Practices / Tips and Tricks.

Second half - Arlen Walker: The Saga of Tracker 9725

Showing the trials of adding unit tests to decade-old legacy code from an Open Source project which was designed and written without testing in mind. We'll cover some approaches to testing legacy code, some test "smells," breaking dependencies, and along the way show how adding the tests led to "discovering" bug #9725 and fixing it without looking for it.

BarCampMilwaukee5

Alt

Saturday, October 2nd 10:00am - Sunday, October 3rd 4:00pm

A BarCamp is a participatory “un-conference” event, where the attendees are in charge of what happens. We provide all the basic needs, and hope that people interested in teaching and learning in an open environment come together to share their knowledge and experience. What will the sessions be about at BarCampMilwaukee5? Whatever people are interested in. In past years, we’ve learned about robots, Drupal, Elevator Hacking, Ruby on Rails, video editing, technology solutions for non-profits, gone on PhotoWalks, discussed Microformats, talked about gadgets, played Nintendo Wii, Guitar Hero, werewolf, seen immersive 3D environments, talked about software development, open source, closed source, web development, geeks and sex… and plenty of other things. (Whew!)

Why is it (sometimes) called an “un-conference”? Because you aren’t coming to see one person speak, or a “panel of experts” on stage. You’re coming to meet and connect with people just like you. We are all experts at our own experiences, and BarCamp is about sharing those experiences with others. If you know something, you shouldn’t be afraid to speak up and say it. If you aren’t sure about something, ask some questions. We like to say that your participation is your entrance fee. BarCampMilwaukee4 will be free (thanks to our sponsors) but you can’t just sit there and absorb… you have to get involved, and take part in the event.

Wikipedia has a great page explaining what a BarCamp is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BarCamp

BarCampMilwaukee5 will take place Saturday October 2nd, 2010 and Sunday October 3rd, 2010. The event will run non-stop from Saturday morning at 10AM until Sunday afternoon at 4PM.

Plans are in development for a Friday night social event to kick things off.

If you are interested in attending, you’ll need to register at barcampmilwaukee.org
